FAQs - Errors caused by Norton and Symantec Software

Errors Caused by Norton and Symantec Software

Quite often we use Norton Antivirus and other Symantec products on our Windows computers to enhance their security. While these tools do help in enhancing the security of our system, because they are very large in size, they can also cause several computer errors. Discussed below are some of the common errors associated with Symantec and Norton products and their solutions.

Error Message: "ccApp.exe is not responding"

Note: This error is displayed during the system startup and shutdown process.

The ccapp.exe error occurs when the Norton AntiVirus product on your computer is not updated. To repair this error message, you need to install the latest Norton update on your computer in which the issue causing the error has been rectified.

You can download and install the update for your version of the Norton product from the Symantec support Website. You may also use the Live Update feature of your Norton tool to update its files.

Error Message: “ccSvcHst.exe – Application error

The instruction at "0x059a2df" referenced memory at 0x059a2df" the memory could not be written. Click OK to terminate the Program.”

This ccSvcHst.exe error message may also be displayed during system startup and shutdown processes. At times, the error message may not display but you may notice that the ccSvcHst.exe is showing high CPU usage in the Task Manager.

This problem occurs due to a bug in a few Norton products and has been rectified in the latest Norton update. To resolve this error message, you may either download the Norton update of your product from the Symantec Web site or run Live Update on your system.

Problem: Rtvscan.exe causes high CPU usage in svchost.exe when you are installing Windows updates on your computer.

This error occurs when the Windows Update process copies several zipped, including nested zipped, files in the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder.

When this happens, the Rtvscan.exe file needs to use high resource allocation to run antivirus scans on your system and thus causes high CPU usage files by the svchost.exe process.

To resolve this problem, you must exclude the SoftwareDistribution from the Auto-Protect scanning process of your Norton Antivirus software.

Error Message: “Runtime error: CCApp.exe”

This error message is displayed when the rpawinet.dll file belonging to your Symantec product is corrupt or damaged. To resolve this error, in Windows Explorer, enable the settings to view hidden files and folders from Tools > Folder Options > View. Next, open the Search window. Here, perform the search for the rpawinet.dll file. When performing the search, you must set the search settings to search for system folders, subfolders, and hidden files and folders.

When the result is displayed in the right pane of the Search window, right-click on the rpawinet.dll file, and then rename it to rpawinet.old.

Note: If you are unable to rename the file here, restart your system in Safe mode and then search for and rename the file as discussed here.

Error Message: "Rtvscan.exe - Application Error: The instruction at "0x77fcc8e1" referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be written or read. Click OK to terminate the program, or cancel to debug the program."

This error message is displayed when the version of DirectX installed on your computer is older than DirectX 8.1. Therefore, you can resolve this error message by installing the latest DirectX on your Windows computer.
