Download
the new software
Firstly,
close everything on your computer except for this web
page.
You
can download the latest version of Windows Defender
free of charge from the Microsoft web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=435BFCE7-DA2B-4A6A-AFA4-F7F14E605A0D&displaylang=en
At
this page, you’ll either have a ‘Continue’
button or a ‘Download’ button just above
the yellow area of the screen. If the button is labeled
‘Continue’ then you will need to run through
the Microsoft product validation procedure. The screens
will guide you through this, but if you struggle with
anything please give us a call. Once you’ve done
the validation, the button will change to ‘Download’.
Click
the ‘Download’ button and save the file
to somewhere familiar so that you’ll be able to
find it later.
Once
the download has completed your web browser will usually
give you the option to run the file. If not, then find
the file you’ve downloaded and run it by double-clicking
it.
The
first screen of the installation procedure is entitled
“Welcome to the Installation Wizard for Windows
Defender”. Click ‘Next’.
The
next screen asks you to validate your copy of Microsoft
Windows. Click ‘Validate’.
The
following screen asks you to accept the terms of the
licence. Click the option “I accept…..”,
and then click ‘Next’.
On
the next screen, put a tick in the top box entitled
‘Use recommended settings’, and then click
‘Next’.
The
following screen should default to ‘Complete’.
Ensure that it does (and change it if it doesn't), and
click ‘Next’.
Click
‘Install’ to commence the installation.
Once
the installation has completed, the "Windows Defender
Install Complete" screen will be displayed. Ensure
there is a tick in the box for "Check for updated
definitions and run a quick scan now", and click
'Finish'.
Protect
RealVNC
Your
Computer Department operates a remote support system.
To allow you to use this system, we install an application
called RealVNC onto your computer. Due to the remote
control nature of this software, Windows Defender classes
it as potentially malicious and will mark it for removal.
Since
we are aware of the existence of RealVNC, we know we
can authorise it's use. To protect RealVNC from uninstallation,
please follow this procedure. Please note that if you
do not have RealVNC installed, then it will not be reported
by Windows Defender.
Following
the installation of the updated product, the system
will have done a scan of your computer and will now
display a results screen.DO NOT PRESS THE BUTTON LABELLED
"Remove All" !!! Instead, underneath it you
will find a blue link called "Review items detected
by scanning". Click this link.
Next
screen, on the line marked "RealVNC" click
the drop down box where it says "Select an action"
and select "always allow".
Click "Apply Actions"
On
the RealVNC line under the heading 'Action', it should
now say 'Always Allow' and under the heading 'Status',
it should now say 'Succeeded'
You
may now close the Windows Defender application window.
The procedure is complete.
If
you are a client of Your Computer Department and have
any difficulty with this procedure, or you would prefer
